Zonah literal, or a seller of baked goods, like the Targum Yonatan has it, seller of baked goods [pundekita], and this is with a good weight. And the true opinion of Yonatan was an actual zonah, since such was the way in places, to translate zonah as seller of baked goods. And so "two women who were prostitutes [zonot]" (I Kings 3:16), [is translated in Targum Jonathan as] sellers of baked goods [pundekan]. And this even though a few of the translations are according to the opinion of Bara, and his opinion was that a zonah is like a seller of baked goods in that she sells herself to all.

To complete the discussion about the prophetesses, the Gemara cites a baraita in which the Sages taught: There were four women of extraordinary beauty in the world: Sarah, and Abigail, Rahab, and Esther. And according to the one who said that Esther was greenish in color, lacking natural beauty, only that a cord of divine grace was strung around her, remove Esther from the list and insert Vashti in her place, for she was indeed beautiful.

The Sages taught in a baraita: Rahab aroused impure thoughts by her name, i.e., the mere mention of her name would inspire lust for her; Yael, by her voice; Abigail, by remembering her; Michal, the daughter of Saul, by her appearance. Similarly, Rabbi Yitzแธฅak said: Anyone who says Rahab, Rahab, immediately experiences a seminal emission due to the arousal of desire caused by Rahabโ€™s great beauty. Rav Naแธฅman said to him: I say: Rahab, Rahab, and it does not affect me. Rabbi Yitzchak said to Rav Naแธฅman: When I said this, I was specifically referring to one who knows her personally and recognizes her beauty. Only for one who has met Rahab in person is the mere mention of her name capable of arousing lust.

Rav Naแธฅman responded to Eina the Elder and said to him: Eina the Elder, and some say that he said to him: Blackened pot, i.e., my colleague in Torah, who has toiled and blackened his face in Torah study, from me and from you the matter may be concluded, i.e., the explanation lies in a combination of our two statements. For Rahab converted and married Joshua, and therefore Huldah descended from both Joshua and Rahab. The Gemara raises a difficulty: But did Joshua have any descendants? But isnโ€™t it written in the genealogical list of the tribe of Ephraim: โ€œNun his son, Joshua his sonโ€ (I Chronicles 7:27)? The listing does not continue any further, implying that Joshua had no sons. The Gemara answers: Indeed, he did not have sons, but he did have daughters.

The Gemara adds that the Sages said with regard to Rahab: She was ten years old when the Jewish people left Egypt, and she engaged in prostitution all forty years that the Jewish people were in the wilderness. After that, when she was fifty years old, she converted when the two spies visited her. She said: May all of my sins of prostitution be forgiven me as a reward for having endangered myself with the rope, window, and flax, by means of which I saved Joshuaโ€™s two spies. Rahab first concealed the spies in stalks of flax, and later assisted them in exiting her home by lowering them from the window with a rope (see Joshua 2:6 and 2:15).

The Gemara offers another explanation of what Yitro heard: Rabbi Eliezer says: He heard about the splitting of the Red Sea and came, as it is stated in a similar context with regard to the splitting of the Jordan in the days of Joshua: โ€œAnd it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, that were beyond the Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, that were by the sea, heard how that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan from before the children of Israel, until they were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them anymore, because of the children of Israelโ€ (Joshua 5:1). And even Rahab the prostitute said to Joshuaโ€™s messengers: โ€œFor we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before youโ€ (Joshua 2:10). The Gemara asks: What is different there, i.e., with regard to the splitting of the Jordan, where the verse states: โ€œNeither was there spirit in them anymore,โ€ and what is different here, i.e., in the statement of Rahab, where the verse states: โ€œNeither did there remain [kama] any more spirit in any manโ€ (Joshua 2:11)? The Gemara replies that Rahab used this phrase euphemistically, to say that their fear was so great that their male organs were not even able to become erect, as โ€œkamaโ€ also means rise. The Gemara asks: And how did Rahab know this? The Gemara replies: As the Master said: You do not have any prince or ruler at that time who did not engage in intercourse with Rahab the prostitute.

The verse states: โ€œAnd she caught him by his garment, saying: Lie with meโ€ (Genesis 39:12). At that moment his fatherโ€™s image [deyokeno] came and appeared to him in the window. The image said to him: Joseph, the names of your brothers are destined to be written on the stones of the ephod, and you are to be included among them. Do you desire your name to be erased from among them, and to be called an associate [roโ€™eh] of promiscuous women? As it is written: โ€œBut he who keeps company with harlots wastes his richesโ€ (Proverbs 29:3), as he loses his honor, which is more valuable than wealth.

We thank thee, O Lord our God, because thou didst give as an heritage unto our fathers a desirable, good and ample land, and because thou didst bring us forth, O Lord our God, from the land of Egypt, and didst deliver us from the house of bondage; as well as for thy covenant which thou hast sealed in our flesh, thy Law which thou hast taught us, thy statutes which thou hast made known unto us, the life, grace and lovingkindness which thou hast vouchsafed unto us, and for the food wherewith thou dost constantly feed and sustain us on every day, in every season, at every hour.
