וַיְכֻלּוּ הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ וְכָל צְבָאָם: וַיְכַל אֱלקִים בַּיּום הַשְּׁבִיעִי מְלַאכְתּו אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה וַיִּשְׁבּת בַּיּום הַשְּׁבִיעִי מִכָּל מְלַאכְתּו אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה: וַיְבָרֶךְ אֱלקִים אֶת יום הַשְּׁבִיעִי וַיְקַדֵּשׁ אתו כִּי בו שָׁבַת מִכָּל מְלַאכְתּו אֲשֶׁר בָּרָא אֱלקִים לַעֲשׂות:

Recite quietly: And evening came, then morning came:

the sixth day.

And the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts And God completed, by the seventh day, His work which He had done; and He abstained on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, for on it He abstained from all His work which God had created to do (Genesis 1:31-2:3).

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, Creator of the fruit of the vine.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who sanctified us with His commandments and was pleased with us. And He gave us His holy Sabbath, with love and pleasure, as a heritage, a commemoration of the work of creation. (For this day is) the first of the days of holy convocations commemorating the exodus from Egypt. (For You have chosen us, and You have sanctified us from among all the peoples.) And You gave us Your holy Sabbath, with love and pleasure, as a heritage. Blessed are You, Lord, Sanctifier of the Sabbath.

(31) And God saw all that had been made, and found it very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

(1) The heaven and the earth were finished, and all their array. (2) On the seventh day God finished the work that had been undertaken: [God] ceased on the seventh day from doing any of the work. (3) And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy—having ceased on it from all the work of creation that God had done.

(יב) וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ה׳ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃ (יג) וְאַתָּ֞ה דַּבֵּ֨ר אֶל־בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַ֥ךְ אֶת־שַׁבְּתֹתַ֖י תִּשְׁמֹ֑רוּ כִּי֩ א֨וֹת הִ֜וא בֵּינִ֤י וּבֵֽינֵיכֶם֙ לְדֹרֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם לָדַ֕עַת כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י ה׳ מְקַדִּשְׁכֶֽם׃ (יד) וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם֙ אֶת־הַשַּׁבָּ֔ת כִּ֛י קֹ֥דֶשׁ הִ֖וא לָכֶ֑ם מְחַֽלְלֶ֙יהָ֙ מ֣וֹת יוּמָ֔ת כִּ֗י כׇּל־הָעֹשֶׂ֥ה בָהּ֙ מְלָאכָ֔ה וְנִכְרְתָ֛ה הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ הַהִ֖וא מִקֶּ֥רֶב עַמֶּֽיהָ׃ (טו) שֵׁ֣שֶׁת יָמִים֮ יֵעָשֶׂ֣ה מְלָאכָה֒ וּבַיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗י שַׁבַּ֧ת שַׁבָּת֛וֹן קֹ֖דֶשׁ לַה׳ כׇּל־הָעֹשֶׂ֧ה מְלָאכָ֛ה בְּי֥וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֖ת מ֥וֹת יוּמָֽת׃ (טז) וְשָׁמְר֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶת־הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת לַעֲשׂ֧וֹת אֶת־הַשַּׁבָּ֛ת לְדֹרֹתָ֖ם בְּרִ֥ית עוֹלָֽם׃ (יז) בֵּינִ֗י וּבֵין֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל א֥וֹת הִ֖וא לְעֹלָ֑ם כִּי־שֵׁ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֗ים עָשָׂ֤ה ה׳ אֶת־הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם וְאֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ וּבַיּוֹם֙ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י שָׁבַ֖ת וַיִּנָּפַֽשׁ׃ {ס}

(12) And ה׳ said to Moses: (13) Speak to the Israelite people and say: Nevertheless, you must keep My sabbaths, for this is a sign between Me and you throughout the ages, that you may know that I ה׳ have consecrated you. (14) You shall keep the sabbath, for it is holy for you. One who profanes it shall be put to death: whoever does work on it, that person shall be cut off from among kin. (15) Six days may work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be a sabbath of complete rest, holy to ה׳; whoever does work on the sabbath day shall be put to death. (16) The Israelite people shall keep the sabbath, observing the sabbath throughout the ages as a covenant for all time: (17) it shall be a sign for all time between Me and the people of Israel. For in six days ה׳ made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day [God] ceased from work and was refreshed.

(ח) זָכ֛וֹר֩ אֶת־י֥֨וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֖֜ת לְקַדְּשֽׁ֗וֹ׃ (ט) שֵׁ֤֣שֶׁת יָמִ֣ים֙ תַּֽעֲבֹ֔ד֮ וְעָשִׂ֖֣יתָ כׇּֿל־מְלַאכְתֶּֽךָ֒׃ (י) וְי֨וֹם֙ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔֜י שַׁבָּ֖֣ת ׀ לַה׳ אֱלֹקֶ֑֗יךָ לֹֽ֣א־תַעֲשֶׂ֣֨ה כׇל־מְלָאכָ֜֡ה אַתָּ֣ה ׀ וּבִנְךָ֣͏ֽ־וּ֠בִתֶּ֗ךָ עַבְדְּךָ֤֨ וַאֲמָֽתְךָ֜֙ וּבְהֶמְתֶּ֔֗ךָ וְגֵרְךָ֖֙ אֲשֶׁ֥֣ר בִּשְׁעָרֶֽ֔יךָ׃ (יא) כִּ֣י שֵֽׁשֶׁת־יָמִים֩ עָשָׂ֨ה ה׳ אֶת־הַשָּׁמַ֣יִם וְאֶת־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֶת־הַיָּם֙ וְאֶת־כׇּל־אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֔ם וַיָּ֖נַח בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֑י עַל־כֵּ֗ן בֵּרַ֧ךְ ה׳ אֶת־י֥וֹם הַשַּׁבָּ֖ת וַֽיְקַדְּשֵֽׁהוּ׃ {ס}

(8) Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy. (9) Six days you shall labor and do all your work, (10) but the seventh day is a sabbath of your God ה׳: you shall not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female slave, or your cattle, or the stranger who is within your settlements. (11) For in six days ה׳ made heaven and earth and sea—and all that is in them—and then rested on the seventh day; therefore ה׳ blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it.

מִצְוַת קִדּוּשׁ שַׁבָּת בִּדְבָרִים – לְדַבֵּר דְּבָרִים בְּיוֹם שַׁבָּת בִּכְנִיסָתוֹ וְכֵן בִּיצִיאָתוֹ, שֶׁיִּהְיֶה בָּהֶם זֵכֶר גְּדֻלַּת הַיּוֹם וּמַעֲלָתוֹ וְהַבְדָּלָתוֹ לְשֶׁבַח מִשְּׁאָר הַיָּמִים שֶׁלְּפָנָיו וְאַחֲרָיו, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (שמות כ ח) זָכוֹר אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת לְקַדְּשׁוֹ, כְּלוֹמַר, זָכְרֵהוּ זֵכֶר קְדֻשָּׁה וּגְדֻלָּה...כְּדֵי שֶׁנִּתְעוֹרֵר מִתּוֹךְ מַעֲשֶׂה זֶה לִזְכֹּר גְּדֻלַּת הַיּוֹם וְנִקְבַּע בִּלְבָבֵנוּ אֱמוּנַת חִדּוּשׁ הָעוֹלָם (שמות כ יא) כִּי שֵׁשֶׁת יָמִים עָשָׂה ה׳ וְגוֹ'...

וְנוֹהֶגֶת בְּכָל מָקוֹם וּבְכָל זְמַן בִּזְכָרִים וּנְקֵבוֹת. וְאַף עַל פִּי שֶׁהִיא מִן הַמִּצְוֹת שֶׁהַזְּמַן גְּרָמָא, שֶׁכֵּן לִמְּדוּנוּ רַבּוֹתֵינוּ זִכְרוֹנָם לִבְרָכָה (שם כ, ב) שֶׁהַנָּשִׁים חַיָּבוֹת בְּקִדּוּשׁ וְהַבְדָּלָה...

The commandment of the sanctification of Shabbat with words: To speak words on the Shabbat upon its entry and also its departure — that there be in them cognizance of the greatness of the day and its stature and its positive distinction from the other days before it and after it; as it is stated (Exodus 20:8), “Remember the Shabbat day, to sanctify it,” meaning to say, remember it with a memory of [its] holiness and greatness...in order that we be aroused through this act to remember the greatness of the day and that we fix upon our hearts faith in the creation of the world, “that in six days the Lord made, etc.” (Exodus 20:11)...

And [it] is practiced in every place and at all times by males and females — even though it is from the commandments that is caused by time (from which women are generally exempt). As so did our Rabbis, may their memory be blessed, teach us (Berakhot 20b) that women are obligated in Kiddush and Havdalah...

...three lines of evidence...pointed to one conclusion; all indicated that the Universe had a beginning. A few scientists bit the bullet and dared to ask ''What came before the beginning?"...Some were even bolder, and asked "Who was the Prime Mover?"...But the views of most physicists and astronomers are closer to that of Saint Augustine, who, asking himself what God was doing before he made Heaven and Earth, gave the reply, "He was creating Hell for people who asked questions like that."...

There is a strange ring of feeling and emotion in these reactions. They come from the heart, whereas you would expect the judgments to come from the brain. Why?

I think part of the answer is that scientists cannot bear the thought of a natural phenomenon which cannot be explained, even with unlimited time and money. There is a kind of religion in science; it is the religion of a person who believes there is order and harmony in the Universe, and every event can be explained in a rational way as the product of some previous event; every effect must have its cause; there is no First Cause...This religious faith of the scientist is violated by the discovery that the world had a beginning under conditions in which the known laws of physics are not valid, and as a product of forces or circumstances we cannot discover...

Consider the enormity of the problem. Science has proven that the Universe exploded into being at a certain moment. It asks, What cause produced this effect? Who or what put the matter and energy into the Universe? Was the Universe created out of nothing, or was it gathered together out of pre-existing materials? And science cannot answer these questions, because, according to the astronomers, in the first moments of its existence the Universe was compressed to an extraordinary degree, and consumed by the heat of a fire beyond human imagination. The shock of that instant must have destroyed every particle of evidence that could have yielded a clue to the cause of the great explosion...A sound explanation may exist for the explosive birth of our Universe; but if it does, science cannot find out what the explanation is. The scientist's pursuit of the past ends in the moment of creation.

This is an exceedingly strange development, unexpected by all but the theologians. They have always accepted the word of the Bible: In the beginning God created heaven and earth...It is unexpected because science has had such extraordinary success in tracing the chain of cause and effect backward in time. We have been able to connect the appearance of man on this planet to the crossing of the threshold of life, the manufacture of the chemical ingredients of life within stars that have long since expired, the formation of those stars out of the primal mists, and the expansion and cooling of the parent cloud of gases out of the cosmic fireball.

Now we would like to pursue that inquiry farther back in time, but the barrier to further progress seems insurmountable. It is not a matter of another year, another decade of work, another measurement, or another theory; at this moment it seems as though science will never be able to raise the curtain on the mystery of creation. For the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.

Astronomers now find they have painted themselves into a corner because they have proven, by their own methods, that the world began abruptly in an act of creation to which you can trace the seeds of every star, every planet, every living thing in this cosmos and on the earth. And they have found that all this happened as a product of forces they cannot hope to discover...That there are what I or anyone would call supernatural forces at work is now, I think, a scientifically proven fact...

(12) Six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you shall cease from labor, in order that your ox and your ass may rest, and that your home-born slave and the stranger may be refreshed.

...לכלול שני הדברים, קביעת השקפה נכונה והוא חדוש העולם...וזכרון חסדי ה׳ עלינו שהניח לנו מתחת סבלות מצרים, וכאלו הוא חסד כללי, באמתת השקפה העיונית ותקינות המצב הגופני.

...We combine the two obligations: belief in the truth as to the world's origin...alongside commemorating God's grace in giving us respite from the burdens of Egypt...The Sabbath is a double gift, in effect, imparting a sound intellectual conviction along with a bodily good.

...it is more fitting to say that because the exodus from Egypt is evidence of the existence of an Eternal G-d, Who caused everything to come into existence through His will and Who has supreme power...therefore he stated here: “If there ever arises a doubt in your heart concerning the Sabbath that evidences the creation of the world by the will and power of G-d, you should remember what your eyes saw at the exodus from Egypt which is, to you, the evidence [of His infinite power] and the remembrance [of His deeds].” Thus the Sabbath is a remembrance of the exodus from Egypt, and the exodus is a remembrance of the Sabbath, for on it [the Sabbath] they remember and say that it is G-d Who makes new signs and wonders in everything and does with everything according to His will since it is He Who created everything at the beginning of creation...

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה׳ אֱלֹקֵֽינוּ מֶֽלֶךְ הָעוֹלָם אֲשֶׁר בָּֽחַר בָּֽנוּ מִכָּל־עָם וְרוֹמְמָֽנוּ מִכָּל לָשׁוֹן, וְקִדְּשָֽׁנוּ בְּמִצְוֹתָיו. וַתִּתֶּן לָֽנוּ ה׳ אֱלֹקֵֽינוּ בְּאַהֲבָה. (אֶת יוֹם הַשַּׁבָּת הַזֶּה וְ)אֶת יוֹם הַזִּכָּרוֹן הַזֶּה יוֹם (זִכְרוֹן) תְּרוּעָה (בְּאַהֲבָה) מִקְרָא קֹֽדֶשׁ זֵֽכֶר לִיצִיאַת מִצְרָֽיִם. כִּי בָֽנוּ בָחַֽרְתָּ וְאוֹתָֽנוּ קִדַּֽשְׁתָּ מִכָּל־הָעַמִּים. וּדְבָרְךָ אֱמֶת וְקַיָּם לָעַד: בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה׳ מֶלֶךְ עַל כָּל הָאָרֶץ מְקַדֵּשׁ (הַשַּׁבָּת וְ) יִשְׂרָאֵל וְיוֹם הַזִּכָּרוֹן:

Blessed are You, Adonoy our God, King of the Universe, Who chose us from among all people, and exalted us above all (tongues) languages, and sanctified us with His commandments. And [You] gave us Adonoy, our God, in love (this Shabbos day, and) this day of Remembrance a day for (the day of remembrance of) sounding the shofar (with love) a day of holy assembly commemorating the exodus from Mitzrayim. For us have You chosen and us have You sanctified from among all peoples; and Your word is true and enduring forever Blessed are You Adonoy, King over all the earth Sanctifier (Of Shabbos and) of Yisrael and the Day of Remembrance:
