What Is Our Relationship to the Earth?

The Torah provides multiple insights as to our relationship with the earth.

The earth is the LORD’s and all that it holds, the world and its inhabitants.

(16) The heavens belong to the LORD,
but the earth He gave over to man.

Is it Our Responsibility to Care for the Earth?

Regardless of our role in earth’s ownership, we are still tasked with caring for the earth.

When the Holy One blessed be He created Adam the first man, He took him and showed him all the trees in the Garden of Eden, and He said to him: ‘See My creations, how beautiful and exemplary they are. Everything I created, I created for you. Make certain that you do not ruin and destroy My world, as if you destroy it, there will be no one to mend it after you.

Why Should We Care for the Earth?

The following story demonstrates the importance of planting trees in the earth:

One day, he was walking along the road when he saw a certain man planting a carob tree. Ḥoni said to him: This tree, after how many years will it bear fruit? The man said to him: It will not produce fruit until seventy years have passed. Ḥoni said to him: Is it obvious to you that you will live seventy years, that you expect to benefit from this tree? He said to him: That man himself found a world full of carob trees. Just as my ancestors planted for me, I too am planting for my descendants.

How Do We Balance This Care with Our Need for Food?

While we have the biological need to eat from the earth’s vegetation, we still have the responsibility to respect and protect the earth from which our food comes.

(29) God said, “See, I give you every seed-bearing plant that is upon all the earth, and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit; they shall be yours for food.
(15) God יהוה settled the Human in the garden of Eden, to till it and tend it.

(23) When you enter the land and plant any tree for food, you shall regard its fruit as forbidden. Three years it shall be forbidden for you, not to be eaten. (24) In the fourth year all its fruit shall be set aside for jubilation before יהוה; (25) and only in the fifth year may you use its fruit—that its yield to you may be increased: I יהוה am your God.

Reflection

Consider the following questions:

  1. Why is it important to remember that G-d created the earth for us?

  2. What relationship do you currently have with the earth? Do you want to change that relationship in any way?

  3. How can you show respect for the earth? How can you protect it?
