The Tongue
Dovid HaMelech says, “Guard your tongue from evil…”[1]
Some of us find this concept very hard to touch base with. Besides the destructive force that the tongue has when it comes to evil, is there a physical aspect to it as well?
The answer is yes! According Huffington Post and other websites, “90% of bad breath comes from bacteria on your tongue.” It’s not just guarding your tongue from evil that one has to be worried about, but also your BREATH as well. As we say every morning, “Let all souls praise Hashem.”[2]
How do does one praise Hashem? With his breath. An interesting thing about the tongue is that, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”[3]
What best the description of this? Sharp words cut like a sword, but words of wisdom heal.[4]
In Hebrew, חֶרֶב means sword and חֹרָב means destroy. A sword causes destruction. If you take the ‘s’ away from ‘sword’ you get ‘word’.
