Aharon Akiva, and Peace
In this week’s parsha the posuk says, ואהבת לרעך כמוך, You shall love your fellow as yourself - I am Hashem.”[1]
Interestingly the numerical of ואהבת לרעך כמוך is 820 which is equal to the word וקדשתי, I shall sanctify.
Who is Hashem sanctifying? The posuk[2] says, “Aharon… shall I sanctify to minister to Me.”
Aharon was the epitome of ואהבת לרעך כמוך! He loved peace, pursued peace and made peace, between one man and another.[3] Not only did he make peace between one man and another, he also made peace between a man and his wife.[4]
Not only are we obligated to love our fellow Jew,[5] we are all responsible for one another.[6]
The Gemara[7] says that during the days of Sefirah between Pesach to Shevuos, twenty-four thousand talmidim[8] of Rebbe Akiva died because they did not treat one another with respect.
The Medrash[9] states that they died because they had a begrudging eye regarding each other’s Torah.[10]
Later, on the same page, the Gemara[11] says, “One who loves his neighbors…[12] the Novi[13] says, Then you will call and Hashem will respond; you will cry (scream) out and He will say, ‘Here I am!’” This is the key to getting our tefillos answered! What is “Here I am” the equivalent of saying? Rabbi Frand answers, “Hashem is saying to us, ‘I am at your service!’”[14]
Is it a coincidence that the tragedy Rebbe Akiva’s talmidim and loving one’s neighbors are on the same page in the Gemara? I don’t think so!
This article is dedicated in loving memory of מַשֶׁה צִבְיָ-ה בת ר' שלמה זלמן who passed away on the 27th of Nissan 5777.
From the time of her burial - until 11 months - her soul is being judged by the heavenly court.
How can YOU provide her with a good defense lawyer?
Say to yourself, “Any mitzvah that I perform or Torah that I study, should be an elevation for the soul of מַשֶׁה צִבְיָ-ה בת ר' שלמה זלמן until her yahrtzeit.”
The declaration only needs to be said once.
