Hevruta
Literally translated as "fellowship," or "partnership," hevruta learning is an ancient model of partnered text study that deciphers greater meaning through struggle, debate, searching, and application to other texts or personal experiences. (Also said by some as "hevrusa" in the Yiddish.)
(3) ...Three who ate at one table and said upon it words of Torah - it is as if they ate from the table of the Omnipresent, blessed be He, as it is said (Ezekiel 41:22): "And he said to me, this is the table that is before the Lord."
Rizpah
In this story from II Samuel, King David sacrifices 7 of King Saul's sons to appease a foreign warring party. Rizpah, mother of two of the boys, encamps at the hill where all the men are hanged for a period of 6 months.
Hagar
Hagar, Egyptian slave of Sarah, is the mother of Abraham's first child Ishmael. When Sarah is unable to conceive, she sends Hagar to have a child with Abraham on her behalf.
"So, for Hagar, motherhood will be a coerced experience involving the violation of her body over which she, as a slave, has no control."
"Is Hagar's naming action a strike against patriarchal power at its highest level, since the ultimate head of this ancient Hebrew family was its patriarchal God? Was Hagar's naming of God an act of defiance and resistance as well as an expression of awe?"
"Hagar and African-American women (with their children) meet God there in the midst of trouble and what appears to be impending death and destruction"
Hannah
Our rabbis teach that Hannah is the model of devotionary prayer--silent, but mouthing the words, full of intention. Hannah is the beloved second wife to Elkana, and prays desperately at the Temple for children. This is her husband's response:
Rachel
Another of the Torah's barren women, a second wife most beloved by her husband, Rachel seeks all the aid she can to concieve.
Jacob
Upon being shown his beloved son's tattered coat covered in blood, Jacob tells his sons of his eternal mourning.
